The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) is a federated organization consisting of five Core Services, the DLESE Project Office and numerous partners who have contributed collections, tools, or services. This loosely knit organization has gained community input and guidance on policy from the Steering Committee and numerous sub-committees such as the Collections Committee and Data Access Working Group. Additionally, DLESE has convened a number of smaller working groups over the years to help develop strategies for library development such as the 2004 Quality Review. Below we provide contact information and basic descriptions for the Steering Committee, Project Office and Core Services.
The DLESE Steering Committee is the governing body for DLESE. The Steering Committee is chartered to provide strong, policy-level guidance and direction for DLESE efforts. The Steering Committee may add additional non-voting members to the Committee to strengthen its ties with other organizations and groups as well as to bring in specific expertise when needed. The Steering Committee is lead by Dogan Seber.
The Project Office, led by the DLESE Executive Director, is the primary point of contact for the DLESE. The Executive Director is responsible for leading community discussions surrounding the growth of the DLESE digital collection, coordinating the development of the services that support the creation of exemplary resources and their use in enhancing geoscience education, and leading the community-building activities of the core service groups. The Project Office team consists of:
Michelle Hall, DLESE Executive Director, Science Education Solutions, Los Alamos, NM
Anne Huth, DBA Aridlands Resource Curriculum, Tucson, AZ
Collections Services
The Collections Services activities focus on accessioning high-quality Earth system resources into the DLESE Community Collection and developing and maintaining the Community Review System (CRS). The CRS is used for gathering and disseminating feedback from users about the effectiveness of resources in the DLESE collection. The cataloging effort is adding new resources to the collection and enhancing the information (metadata) available for resources in the existing collection. The Collections team consists of:
Kim Kastens, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Palisades, NY
Sharon Tahirkheli, American Geological Institute, Alexandria, VA
Community Services
The Community Services goals are to increase and diversify the resource user and contributor base among K-12, informal, and college educators and students; improve the ability of users and contributors to easily find, adapt, and effectively use high quality digital resources in their classrooms, laboratories, and communities; demonstrate how DLESE can support community activity addressing issues in geoscience education; and develop on-line community services that facilitate communication and sharing among the DLESE community. The Community Services project teams include:
K-12 Community efforts, led by:
Bryan Aivazian, Natrona County School District, Casper, WY
Edward E. Geary, UCAR Office of Programs, Boulder, CO
Higher Education Community efforts, led by:
Cathy Manduca, Science Education Resource Center (SERC), Carleton College, Northfield, MN
Dave Mogk, Montana State University, Bozeman, MT
Data Services
The goals of Data Services are to actively identify educational modules incorporating Earth science datasets and tools and make them accessible to educators via DLESE; to facilitate the interaction of data providers and developers of curriculum and data access and analysis tools for the purpose of resource and tool development; and to ensure that the Earth system science (ESS) datasets, tools, and educational modules are accessible through DLESE.
The Data Services team consists of:
Tamara Ledley, TERC, Cambridge, MA
Ben Domenico, Unidata, Boulder, CO
LuAnn Dahlman, TERC, Cambridge, MA
Mike Taber, University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, CO
Evaluation Services
The activities of Evaluation Services span a wide range of planning and conducting evaluation for DLESE. This includes conducting formative evaluation of DLESE (user needs, data access, collections, outreach, etc); classroom evaluation of DLESE use on teaching practices and learning outcomes; and collecting, synthesizing, and reporting evaluation findings.
The Evaluation Services team consists of:
Susan Buhr (sbuhr at cires.Colorado.edu) CIRES, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO
Lecia Barker (Lecia.J.Barker at Colorado.edu), ATLAS, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO
Tom Reeves (treeves at uga.edu), University of Georgia, Athens, GA
DLESE Program Center
The goals of the DLESE Program Center are to develop and provide the core library infrastructure that will enable distributed collections and services to act as an integrated whole. The infrastructure includes tools for collection cataloging, resource discovery, and services that promote interoperability with other library efforts (e.g. NSDL). Additional services support community building and governance.
The Program Center team consists of:
Mary Marlino, DLESE Program Center, UCAR Office of Programs, Boulder, CO
Tamara Sumner, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO
David Fulker, UCAR Office of Programs, Boulder CO
